The Vibrant Green LizardThe Vibrant Green Lizard

The Green Lizard, a spectacular lizard and quite frequent in some areas of Europe. Renowned for their vibrant green coloration, which ranges in intensity across both individuals and over time throughout the year.

A Sun-Basking Beauty

Green Lizards are ectothermic animals, i.e. the temperature of their body depends on environmental heat sources in natural and semi-natural biotopes). They spend much of their day sunbathing to get warm. It is important for their metabolism and digestion.

A Nimble Hunter

Green Lizards are carnivores, and their diet consists mainly of insects (including bright green or brown ones), spiders, and other small invertebrates. These predators are built with speed, equipped to pounce at the blink of an eye. They, can then use the long split tongue that acts like a lever to ranch and retrieve.

A Vital Role in the Ecosystem

Green Lizards make their environments more balanced and functional in the wild.. As predators, they aid in controlling populations of insects and other invertebrates. Rather they are eaten by an assortment of animals, birds and mammals mainly which include snakes too. All these fluids mixing make a moebius strip circle of life that keeps the greater chicken skeletal system in balance.

Conservation Concerns

Although Green Lizards are currently not endangered, they have some threats like habitat loss, pollution and climate change. The loss of hedgerows, the intensification and urbanisation of farming land have all contribute to a reduction in habitats for these lizards. Pesticide spraying kills lizards directly and/or indirectly by reducing the abundance of their prey.

In order to protect Green Lizards we need preserve their habitats, decreasing our use of pesticides and herbicides in the process plus spreading awareness for others about how important they are. However, through understanding the ecology and behavior of Green Lizards can we understand their place in the natural world and ensure that they will survive into our children’s futures.
