The Common Lizard is a small, fast reptile that can be seen in gardens and woodlands throughout Europe. They are colorful creatures that thrive in various habitats, from coastal dunes to mountain meadows.

A Colorful Creature

The stunning colours of a Common Lizard (above), which can vary according to sex and location. During the breeding season, males are usually bright green or blue and females brown to olive green. These bright colors are for courtship (in males) and intimidation purposes.

A Sun-Basking Lifestyle

Common Lizards are ectothermic creatures which is true for the majority of reptiles. Basking in the sun for extended period to help raise their body temperatures. This is important behavior for their metabolism and digestion.

A Nimble Hunter

A Vital Role in the Ecosystem

Basic Lizard are keystones in their territories. They feed on insects and other invertebrates, reducing their numbers through predation. They are food for many animals including birds, mammals and snakes. Together these interactions form a complex web that balances the ecosystem.

Conservation Concerns

Although Common Lizards are presently not classed as being endangered, a number of potential threats exist for the species including habitat degradation and loss; pollution and climate change. Habitat suitable for these lizards has declined due to the reduction of hedgerows, intensification in agriculture and increased urbanisation extending into rural areas. Pesticides have more indirect effects on parasitic forms of snakes but kill lizards outright.

Conservation of habitats and reducing the amount chemicals (e.g. slug pellets, pesticides) used are both important in helping protect at risk species like Common Lizards Encouraging wildlife-friendly gardens, holding onto hedgerows, and highlighting the complete avoidance of pesticides are but three ways through which these delightful lizards can be saved from oblivion.
