The songbird European Robin (Rotkehlchen in German; Erithacus rubecula) is a popular and well-known species due to its brightly colored plumage, melodic singing. The deep-red to orange chest along olive-brown upper parts make it a black and tan bird unlike the typical sparrow with clear golden hues. For many of us this tiny bird that skips around on the lawn or sits atop our garden fence is a welcome sight.
The enchanting song of the European Robin is one of its more charismatic features. During the breeding season, they fill the air with their melodious songs made up of whistles trills and fluty notes all around. The song that arises from all of this is melodious, and both attractive to potential mates and a territorial statement intended to keep other birds at bay. The European Robin is an adaptable species, capable of feeding on a wide range of invertebrates and other food types so that its diet varies seasonally (and with geographical location). It feeds mostly on insects, worms and spiders in the summer, gleaning them from the ground or plucking them from vegetation. As such, it tends to stay near gardeners where the soil has been recently turned and insects or worms have been exposed. Moving into autumn, the robin’s diet changes to include fruits and berries from trees such as holly and ivy (see my post Nature Table for September )rowan. This dietary plasticity makes the species to flourish in different habitats ranging from dense woodlands to urban gardens.
However, the European Robin is now faced by a number of threats that threaten its populations. The availability of nesting and foraging sites has been reduced by the destruction or modificationof lowland habitats due to agricultural intensification, river regulation schemes, drainage projectsand urban encroachment. Pesticides can also ruin both the birds and their nutrition sources, making more trouble for lifting their number. In addition, migration collisions with windows can generate significant hon.
Conservation actions are taking place to save the European Robin. Among those are habitat restoration, use of fewer pesticides and encouragement for bird-friendly gardening practices. Bird lovers can also support this favorite bird by creating gardens friendly for birds, reducing the use of pesticides and supplying them with nesting spaces.
If we understand and appreciate that the European Robin occupies a unique ecological niche, then steps will be taken to conserve this charismatic little bird. This way, we are able to render hope that future generations will know the beauty and magic of this wonderful creation.
