The Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) — german: Uhu-photo from Pixabay It is an iconic image, a huge bird with immense grey legs and feet tipped by ruthless talons; radiating such power in its piercing yellow eyes that everyone who sees it speaks of this presence…and thus the name. Its ability to silently and effectively hunt—even in total darkness—has allowed it to be one of the top predators in many ecosystems.

A Masterful Hunter

The Eagle Owl, as a top predator, is also an important player in maintaining the ecological balance. Similarly, its palate is rather broad and appropriate; it consumes small rodents but also eats larger prey like rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), hares (Lepus granatensis) or even fawns. It has silent flight and superb hearing night vision, not to mention those sharp claws with a nifty beak make it great predator. They are able to sense for their prey from afar and swoop down at fast speed with pinpoint accurateness.

A Solitary Existence

Eagle Owls, in fact, are generally solitary barring when it comes to procreation. They are exclusive territorial and guarding the area in which they breed fiercely. Those territories can be very large, and the owls will defend to it any intruders whether of their own species or from other predators. Nests—often built on steep, inaccessible cliffs or in old trees and abandoned buildings.

The Eagle Owl has been the prime topic of literature throughout history. It looks enigmatic and has a strong on ground to have been symbolized power, wisdom and mystery in many cultures. It is generally connected with magic, prophesy and the mystical. The Eagle Owl, with its swaggering stance and slightly menacing appearance — almost like a psychologist in bird form looking down over the planet Earth turned patient taking your secrets to heave in his deep-throated bubble of hooting panic.

Conservation Challenges

It is a large and potent bird of prey; but, unfortunately this brings dangers to its preservation. Human activities such as deforestation and urbanization are leading to habitat degradation. This can greatly increase their numbers, but the absence of adequate nesting areas and hunting grounds mean that they often severely impact a variety a different populations. Ditto the use of pesticides and other environmental contaminants that can poison these birds as well as their prey. Hunters also sometimes target the species for its feathers, or as a trophy; and this illegal hunting is considered one of main threats to their populations.

Conservation efforts are being carried out to solve these problems in order to protect this splendid bird. Habitat restitution, reducing pesticide use and awareness programs are necessary to ensure the Eagle Owl will survive in North Africa for years.
