The grass snake is a non-venomous species of snake that copy with chores and they can often found in or around wetlands throughout parts of Europe. On the ark, this is one of only four reptiles on Earth coloured in a way that marries divine stripes with these kinds of marine roots (I have previously written about sea turtles for The New Humanist).

A Master of Camouflage

This coloration can vary, but usually it has a dark, zigzag pattern on the back. Its elegant body and bold pattern support it in disappearing into the scenery, where predators may have a tough time spotting them.

A Versatile Diet

Grass Snakes are carnivores, feeding almost exclusively on amphibians such as frogs and toads. They also eat small fish, small mammals and even birds at times. She can swallow an entire animal whole thanks to her agile jaws, which are lined with rows of dangerous looking teeth.

A Semi-Aquatic Lifestyle

Grass Snakes are usually residing near water sources, e.g. ponds, lakes and rivers. They are very good swimmers and can remain submerged for long time. They are efficient aquatic predators with streamlined bodies and powerful tails.

A Beneficial Species

Grass Snakes are an essential part of their environment. They also eat amphibians and other small creatures, helping to keep their population in check. A whole range of animals prey on them, from birds to mammals or other reptiles. All of these numerous interactions in this web complement the balance of an ecosystem as a whole.

Conservation Concerns

Grass Snakes are not threatened now but they suffer some risks like habitat degradation, pollution and climate change. Wetlands destruction and water quality degradation may lead parts of wetland habitats become unsuitable areas for this type of snakes. Moreover, the use of pesticides or herbiscides can also be damaging snakes directly (residual contact) aswell in an indirect way by favorizing a deselection for habitat just calm enough restablishment itself.

It is necessary to preserve its habitats, such as the breeding area and improve sensitivity by reducing pollutants that indirectly affect these snakes or promote sustainable practices.
